Pertusis is also known as whooping cough. Although it can seem like a normal cold at first, it can develop into a terrible cough that can even stop breathing for short periods. Although pertusis will usually run its course and go away on its own in time, there are possible complications that can occur and that's often where the real problem is. Very young and very old people are particularly vulnerable to these complications, so it's important to keep your doctor abreast of any changes that may occur.
