Pertusis, or whooping cough, can be very disruptive on a day to day basis. For the most part, there aren't effective treatments for the cough itself. In most cases, the illness just has to run it's course, which may be a few weeks or a few months.
However, if collateral illnesses develop in addition to pertusis, then it's important to treat those illnesses immediately since your immune system is already weak.
