Hydrocephalis

Hydrocephalis is the build up of excess fluid in the brain. Specifically, it's the build up of cerebrospinal fluid in the ventricles of the brain.

The ventricles are "pockets" in your brain that normally contain fluid. But as more fluid enters the ventricles, the fluid that's already there needs to get out. If it's prevented from getting out as fast as it's getting in, then there's an excess, which puts pressure on neighboring parts of the brain.

There's presently no known way to cure this hydrocephalis, but it can be treated by putting a shunt in the brain to drain off the fluid to other areas. With this treatment, people can often live very normal lives.

Hydrocephalus is most often seen in babies who are born with the condition. In adults, it can sometimes result from traumatic brain injury.

If untreated, hydrocephalis can cause brain damage from the excess pressure and eventually death.
