Blepharitus

Blepharitus is a disorder of the eyes that is remarkably common, but little known by most people. It can cause anything from mild eye irritation to significant redness, itching, and burning of one or both eyes.

In one form, blepharitus can be caused by a certain bacteria living on the eyelid around the eyelashes. In this form, there may be crusting around the eyelashes.

On the inside of the eyelid, blepharitus can be a malfunction in the oil glands just inside the eyelids. The oil lubricates the eyes and if the glands don't release enough oil, then irritation can occur.

There is no cure, but there are some common treatments which help some people more than others.

You can apply a warm moist compress to the eyelids for 10 minutes or so and then clean them gently with a moist cloth. You can also try to wash your eyelids well when you shower or bathe. Warming the eyelids may help make the oil more viscous, thus releasing more from the glands. And scrubbing can help keep the area clean.

Antibiotic ointments may also be applied to the eyes, but this can sometimes make the condition worse rather than better.
