What's Wrong With Me?
Cistic Fibrosis
Posted By: Dave Date: Saturday, October 22 2005, at 9:33 a.m.
Cistic fibrosis is a genetic disorder, which is to say that you get it from your parents and you're born with it. With cistic fibrosis, your saliva, intestinal secretions, and mucus tend to be thicker than they're supposed to be because your body doesn't know how to make them properly.
Obviously, this can cause digestive problems. But more importantly, it often leads to respiratory problems. In fact, respiratory problems are the primary cause of death from cicstic fibrosis.
Fortunately, more treatments are being developed to allow people with CF to live much longer than used to be possible.
