Emphisema is a respiratory problem, and the largest cause by far is heavy smoking and long term smoking of cigarettes. However, it can also be a result of other factors, such as heavy air pollution. Some people have a genetic predisposition that make them more likely to get it. But this would only normally happen under the right circumstances (for example if they smoke). Men have historically gotten emphisema much more than women, but this may be because men have historically smoked a lot more than women.
