What's Wrong With Me?
Emphizema
Posted By: Dave Date: Thursday, October 27 2005, at 12:32 p.m.
Emphizema is a disease that takes a long time to develop. Most people who have it are over 50 years old. Once it starts, it still may not be obvious for some time because the symptoms tend to move in after other health problems like colds or bronchitus.
It starts with a nagging cough and occasional shortness of breath. As it progresses, the cough becomes more persistent and shortness of breath becomes more common. Even the most mild exercise might make breathing difficult.
This slow progression is because there is a gradual degradation of the airways in the lungs. Smoking will bring this on far more than anything else, so if you start to see symptoms, you should make every effort to stop smoking.
