In addition to the more common treatments for emphazema, it's also possible to have surgery to remove parts of the lungs that are damaged. Although this surgery can improve breathing quite a bit, it's also a relatively high risk surgery. Medical techniques continue to improve, but there has been a rather high mortality rate with this surgery in the past.
