Because strept throat is caused by a bacterial infection, it can only be treated with antibiotics. Antibiotics commonly used to treat strept include amoxcillin and erythromicin.
Amoxicillin is a form of penicillin, but erythromicin is not. So erythromicin can be used to treat patients who are allergic to penicillin.
