West Nial Virus

The west nial virus has been getting a lot of attention in recent years. It's a virus that originated in Africa, which is where the name comes from. Although there haven't been a lot of verified cases of west nial in the US, it's gotten a lot of attention because the mortality rate.
Still, everyone who gets west nial doesn't die. It's particularly threatening to people who have weak immune systems, and this will usually be very young, very old, or people who are already ill. If your immune system is strong, then it will probably fight off the illness. You'll feel just miserable in the meantime, and it can hang on for a while, but at least you'll live.
The best thing you can do avoid getting it is to avoid mosquitos. Try not to spend much time outside where there are mosquitos and use repellent when you do.
