High Blood Presure

High blood presure is often defined as blood presure measurements higher than 140 over 90 for an extended period of time. But what is it?

The 140 is a measure of systolic presure. That's the amount of presure in your arteries when your heart is pumping blood out. The 90 is diastolic presure, which is the presure in your arteries when your heart is resting between pumps.

When the pressure is high, that means your heart is working harder than it should to pump blood through your body. And that means it may not last as long as it should. So if your blood presure is high, it's important to find a way to lower it.
