There is a great book about trich, "The Hair Pulling Problem". I have been pulling my hair out for over 40 years. I know this is way more common than is known. I am in a particularly hard time of it now. I feel my problem comes from stress and some kind of overstimulation issue. Also I go into some other space, mind altering state when I'm pulling. Don't still understand it but I felt when reading this book that it was a time when I was beginning to understand it. It surely has a neurological component. Melissa, I really think it important to make the issue conscious. Help your son by talking about it but only after you understand more about it. Try hard not to make him feel like its wierd but stress related and surely let him know that some people do it to try to manage stress but that it isn't a very good choice of ways to help himself.
