Mellisa,
I am glad that you found my words to be encouraging to you and you son's situation.
Yes, the hair pulling is obsesive. It is not, in my opinion, a habit. It cannot be stopped by making a simple decision. I believe it can be stopped by making a choice. There is a big difference. So, ask yourself; is what you are doing now working? If it is not working, then make a different choice.
I am sure there are lots of websites on the EMDR technique I had mentioned. I do believe that there is authenic help for trich sufferers who choose this type of therapy. Even just calling around your local area will provide you some leads as to professionals who are experienced with this methodology of therapy. There are beginners and more advanced professionals. Please seek out the most advanced and most experienced person for the task at hand.
As to PSI Education, it is something I reccomend for every person on the face of this planet. There website is: www.psiseminars.com. The website will provide you with the locations for you to participate in the Basic class. You as the parent have to do the Basic class first before you can send your child/children. This way you can go into the education with open eyes and also be able to better support your child with their growth experience.
This education is not a typical lecture type education. It is experiential. You will get to do exercises that provide an environment for living the experience, as opposed to being taught an idea. That is one of the reasons why it works so well for everybody regardless of your situation or the challanges that you face. We are all of different and this education works no matter what your background, sex, religion, social statues, etc, etc, etc. Doing is much more effective than being told what to do.
I would say for you to go to a Basic class now. Sign up for the next Basic as soon as you can and find out when the next Kids Basic class is right now. Then sign your son up for that class right away. Put aside all the doubt and just follow your gut on this one. Put aside all the "I can't bacause....blah, blah, blah, and get both of you to the classes.
I have lots of contacts all over the USA and Canada that will support your family with lots of love. There is an enourmous amount of support out there for you, know that.
You can tackle the hair pulling situation with your son with a two fold approach. Get the PSI Education, and get him EMDR therapy. Don't screw around. Take this on as though it was his life. Do that because it is his life.
Again I say that I am a woman with only what I understand as a woman, a mom, a human being and nothing more.
