I have had peripheral neuropathy for a number of years due to vasculitis in the legs. The thing that helps neuropathy the most is medication. Stockings really don't help. There are several types but the two I am mst familiar with are amitryptaline which is an anti-depressant that helps with pain and the other in neurontin, an anti-seizure medication that has as a side effect, relief from nerve pain and some healing of nerves. I found neurontin to be more useful. It takes alot (usually 1800mg to 3600 mg daily) and you have to build up to that very slowly so that you don't feel groggy. I did go up slowly and did not suffer any side effects. It was helpful in relieving the pain.
Another thing I found was that certain sensations are very uncomfortable, like air circulating around my legs. It feels like sand paper and burns badly. Sheets also feel awful. I found that by covering my legs with fleece socks or blankets it is very soothing and comfortable.
