Urinary track infections are caused by bacteria building up somewhere in the urinary track, most often in the urethra or bladder.
Most cases are caused by a bacteria that normally lives in the colon, but ends up in the urinary track somehow. However, there are also cases that are caused by bacteria that can be transmitted during sex. Babies can get bacteria into the urinary track from dirty diaper occasionally.
You may also be more susceptible to UTIs if you have a congenitally malformed urinary track.
