I am almost 48 yo and barely remember when I began pulling. I think I was aroung 11 yrs old, cute & popular kid. I stareted pulling for unknown reasons but my classmates were intreaged or impressed with the fact that I could pull several strands of hair out at a time. Maybe I did it for attention? I would then eat the hair. Well, this turned into my ugly, silent secret for the rest of my life. I became embarassed and as kids (boys) became older they began to make fun of me. I started to hide my "talent" but my head was BALD! I began wearing ski caps to school in the middle of summer. From then on I grew my hair long and NEVER went to a salon (thank god I have very thick hair). I'd sneak the pulling at work, in the car, watching TV and anywhere I'd think I could get away with it. I still have thick hair (very lucky) and my hair is now cut short like Posh Spice or Katie Holmes and no one knows unless I tell them about my condition. I get lots of compliments on my hair and I too love it. (I am no longer boycotting hair salons however, NOT ONE of the hair professionals that I've seen over the last 25 years knows or has even hear of trich & they should) However, I just can't figure out why I continue to mutilate myself. I eat every strand of hair and my dental hygenist always finds it! There is no cure for trich. No anti depresants will cure what we have. This is not a mental condition like OCD. It's a physical conditional that few are born with. I read a book recently about trich and now understand that I am not a freak! I never knew that ANYONE but myself did this until the erly 90's. We are still a HUGE minority and it is a really weird thing to do. I know I al of us would choose noy to have trich however, there's lots worse things to be hooked on. Let's just forgive ourselves for this and be thankful that we don't have more damaging habits! PEACE!
